  Fossil or biogenic fuel stoves usually stands in front of or next to the chimney and are connected to it with a stove pipe. They can be distinguished from an open fireplace in that it has a combustion chamber that is closed except for air inlet openings and that it is usually not installed. The stove often has a door with a window made of transparent glass ceramic. This material, which is heat-resistant up to around 700 ° C, has been around since the 1970s.

  A stove is usually made of cast iron or sheet steel. It often has one pane (sometimes several) for a clear view of the firebox. A stove releases the heat energy partly in the form of radiation to the room and partly by heat conduction to the room air, where it is then distributed by convection. Basic ovens (synonymous with storage ovens) emit the most heat through radiation. The heat transfer to the ambient air and the heat transfer through the materials of the furnace (steel, chamotte, natural stone, glass) depend on the temperature in the furnace.

  Stove comes with a casting grate on the furnace-chamber floor. The primary airflow is fed into the combustion chamber via the ash bin and the secondary air (which can be regulated) via the feeder-wood compartment. Doors and ash-bin screens are insulated with heat-resistant asbestos material. A casting adaptor facilitates easy connectibility to the flue pipe. All fireside stoves come equipped with self-closing doors as standard fitting.
